The Arroyo Arts Collective, in conjunction with the Audubon Center at Debs Park, presents “Birds of a Feather,” an exhibit by five women artists on the topic of birds. Although they work in a variety of media, all of the artists are concerned with the birds found in our Northeast LA community. Their varied approaches to bird culture serve to complement each other in thoughtful ways.

Rachel Siegel and Inka Bujalska collaborate on a series of “houses of bird cards.” Their sketches of local birds have been printed on decks of cards and then constructed into fragile birdhouses, implying a delicate ecological balance.

Kay Brown, printmaker and member of Los de Abajo Collective of printmakers, has shown her individual and collaborative prints in many venues. Kay’s pieces for this exhibit are mainly woodcuts and litho transfers on the subject of crows.

Jeanie Frias presents work featuring small animal bones gathered from the hills of Northeast Los Angeles. She creates miniature hierarchies and balancing acts that include themes of artmaking, domesticity, relationships, and loss.

Suzanne Siegel works in collage and assemblage utilizing found objects and images, old family photos, thrift store bargains, constructed entities and natural materials. She juxtaposes these elements to address issues of identity and environment.

The exhibition and the Audubon Center are free to the public.
