The ’13 Women’ show (1-15 March 2013 at the Brighton Jubilee Library) is a professionally curated art exhibition co-inciding with International Women’s Day. To celebrate the rise of gender equality the exhibition includes 13 women and 13 men, each represented with a single, exclusive piece of art (see separate press release for the show). The show includes artists from Egypt, USA and Germany and of course Britain.
Under her trademark Sepalia, Marga Beuth has submitted a new piece of art: a large handprinted collagraph entitiled ‘Vulva Landscape’.
The vulva (or vagina) shape has been transformed into a simple oval shape with pointed ends: turning a taboo body part into the more familiar almond shape and placed it in the context of an abstract landscape.
Somehow the almond shape connects with the viewer on a deeper level; it is an archetypal shape, better known in Eastern Philosophy as the ‘yoni symbol’.
The artwork resonates with natural feminine energy : luscious and strong, beautiful and timeless. This piece is part of series of works attempting to create new visual representations for The Feminine and feminine energy. These vulva symbols will soon become new graphical shorthand for femininity.
