What Central Park is to New York, Rittenhouse Square is to Philadelphia--but on a more intimate scale. Ringed by apartment buildings such as the one from whose 13th story this oil-on-canvas view of its western side was painted, the Square anchors a culturally rich yet diverse neighborhood. Through the shining shrouds of winter, Rittenhouse stands out as the choicest of five squares first set aside for public use by William Penn's surveyor, at the Quaker City’s founding in 1682.
