What Makes a Good Painting?

I am never surprised when a painting I have little appreciation for receives an award or is purchased for display. Why? Because there are a multitude of tastes as there are colors. Why do I prefer coffee over tea some days and others neither is appealing? In my experience it is mood my paintings evoke and the fact that they match the environment in which it is going to be placed in. It is, like a good pair of shoes, also the desire of the patron to acquire this piece that evoked those emotions. One gal who has purchased a number of my pieces was telling a fellow artist in a gallery setting, "I really like a piece I bought from Kathleen. It is the first thing I see when I come home from work and it makes me happy." Of course that makes it a good painting and I am delighted to hear it in such a way.

thanks for sharing your perspective. always baffled by the same question. I have finally come to the same conclusion of not being surprised either after reluctantly selling a sketch to a friend. Person really wanted it, I didn't think it was a very good piece. My wife helped me come to my senses asking me who I was to question a person about how to be moved by a sketch of mine. I relented selling the person my sketch and they love it for the same reasons you stated, it was pleasing to them.
