What Its Like to Have Diabetes

Being diabetic isn’t fun at all. My mother was diagnosed with type 2 about 8 years ago. She has been through several different procedures/forms of giving herself insulin. In the beginning she used syringe pens where she had to screw on a new needle tip to it and then select the right amount of units. Now she uses a high tech pump/computer that is always connected to her via medical tubing. She just pushed a few buttons after a meal and that’s it, only hard part is getting it attached to her but she only needs to do about every two days. It can be very scary sometimes when her blood sugar levels are too low, or high. One day my mom and I were driving home and she started talking about very random things, and swerving the car. I asked her to pull over, and let me drive. We switched, but I had to help her into the car and give her a glucose tablet. It's a little funny, because she acts like she is completely drunk when it happens. I wouldn’t be able to handle it like she does.
