What I Learned While Working at Local Art Gallery

During the summer months, I took advantage of the opportunity to volunteer as a greeter at a local art gallery. While this gallery is small (just like the community I live in), it is a popular stop for locals and tourists alike, and is always teeming with activity.

The artists who showcase in this gallery include a variety of painters and photographers, each with their own signature style. They are a very friendly bunch and were always willing to share their processes and techniques with visitors. These conversations were truly invaluable to me—especially from the artists who specialized in abstract art.

In addition to having face-to-face conversations with these working artists, I also had the opportunity to listen to comments from visitors to the art gallery. Since people all have differing artistic tastes, their facial expressions while looking at a piece of art was always quite telling. I definitely started to get a sense of what types of artwork were admired and appreciated, but more importantly, I got a sense of which pieces of artwork were most likely to end up being “marketable”.

All-in-all, this was a very positive learning experience for me and has helped guide me as I continue to learn and grow in my field of digital abstract art. Who knows, maybe someday I’ll get to have some of my own contemporary artwork hanging in this same gallery.
