The Truth of Happy Hour | Acrylic on Canvas | 12 x 16 inches
This work of art is about alcohol. Thus, I painted the ancient divine quintessential of happy hour, the god of wine himself, Dionysus. Although it started as a study of an old master painting, Peter Paul Ruben's Two Sartyrs, I altered it significantly to include my interpretations. The bright saturated colors replacing the natural skin tones, which give the painting its prominence, hold the key to its meaning. And such a false representation of the skin tone refer to a similar truth that is evident when drinking.
The more you drink the most honest you become. With each drink, the socially contracted filters that help you mask yourself break down, you become transparent and your true colors are all at once visible. Typically, each of as are like a one of a kind work of art, covered permanently by a thick layer of dust to a point of obscurity, and we fit perfectly with all the other dusty artworks around as. And to drink is to be dusted off temporarily
