The Story of The Poppy

This website is a dream come true! I cannot tell you how long I have wanted to illustrate my poetry, prayers and inspirational writings and offer them as greeting cards and wall art. Perhaps this all would have happened sooner, but in my case, I have had a whole lot of emotional issues and internal battles to get here.

As my bio says, I suffered with anorexia nervosa and its depression for the majority of my life. This illness, although healed through the grace of God, still left many unresolved issues. Issues like the "I'm not good enough" and "I'm worthless" scenarios. It left behind paralyzing fear to move forward and step out in faith to live my life. But this blog isn't about my personal life. I already have a blog for that purpose at: http://www.belindarose.com. So, if you are interested in my personal musings, you can find such things there. This blog is going to be about my poetry and writings. It is about the "story behind the image". So, each week I will feature a different piece and talk about what inspired it!

This week, I'd like to talk briefly about the image above that I simply titled,"Poppy". This image is dedicated to my Mom, because the poppy was always her favorite flower.

I grew up in Small Town, USA. Although we lived in a humble little house, what it lacked in size was made up for in the breathtaking flowers you could find every spring and summer in our yard. We had hands down the prettiest yard in the neighborhood! My Dad always had a passion for flowers and the green thumb to go along with it. One thing I am very happy he passed on to me! Anyway, every year he made sure my Mom had a flower bed dedicated to poppies.

Oh, how pretty they were too! But no matter how lovely the poppies were, the image that stands out in my mind is the smile on my Mom's face every time she went outside to admire them. Her radiant smile at something as simple as a flower bed full of poppies will stay in my heart always. What a lesson that is for me in enjoying and appreciating the little things in life! That really is what life is all about isn't it? If we could all just be happy and contented with the small things life gives us and not worry and strive so hard for all the material things, wouldn't we all be happier in the long run?

My Mom will have her 89th birthday on October 5. Her health is now very poor and she is on hospice care. I intend to give her this piece for the wall across from her bed for her birthday and I hope every time she glances at it, it brings that same radiant smile to her beautiful face. God gave us this lovely, fragile and colorful flower to make us smile; just like my Mom always has every time she sees it! Something tells me each time our Lord watched her face light up at her "field of poppies", He must have been very pleased indeed!

All God's Blessings,
Belinda
