The Fields of Gettysburg

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania is not far from Washington, D.C. On our recent trip to Washington we took a side trip to Gettysburg, PA. While I am not a war or history aficionado, I do know hollowed ground when I see it. We went on a sunny March day when the landscape was still brown from the winter season. In spite of the beauty of the spring day, I could still feel something of the ghosts of the men who died there. The battle of Gettysburg was fought 152 years ago but even though you see no trace of the bloodshed that was spilled there you still get a sense of awe and soberness when you look out into those fields. There were over 50,000 casualties those 3 days the Confederate and Union armies fought. Both sides suffered huge losses. I have seen many pictures and illustrations over the years of the dead and dying, both men and horses, lying on those fields. This picture doesn't show those losses, of course, but when I look at it I remember how I felt standing in the field where so many died. This is a place all Americans should visit some day.
