The Dark and the Light of It

When I sat down with my watercolor pencils (yes, pencils), I had no idea what I would end up with. I just knew that I hadn't drawn in days, and the desire to be creative again was overwhelming. I was feeling kinda depressed, which is common for me at this time of year. I knew that it would ease my pain to just sit down and draw whatever came to me. So I did.
I started out with a dark gray pencil, which reflected my mood at the time. I drew big, pointy shapes, that in my mind looked like stars. They were dark and moody. I figured this painting may turn out kinda brooding. But, what the heck! I kept going.
Then I went back to the box of pencils for background colors. I wanted colors that would compliment the gray and provide a nice contrast. I ended up reaching for two shades of pink and a bold yellow. I drew stripes on the background and started coloring them in. The end result surprised me!
The background was bright and happy! The colors, which resemble pink lemonade, are cheerful. They totally balance out the gray and makes those stars a little brighter!
I love this painting, and I hope you do, too. It is the perfect balance of happy and sad, dark and bright. And you know what? By the time I finished this piece, I was a whole lot happier!
