The Attachment to My Sketchbooks

After my first trip abroad to Japan many moons ago, I began taking a sketchbook every place I travelled to...and this continues today. I work from observation, memory, and the photos that I take along the way. Everything thing that I produce starts from this point. Some sketchbooks remain unfinished for years until I suddenly go back to one on a given day. For this reason, my images are often very dream-like since I sometimes rely on my memory and feelings of the place I was at. I begin with realism but works can often abstract and morph into other realms...and this is what I like best. I will often revisit my sketchbooks to make larger paintings. This occurs more as I age. Relying on memory forces me to finish ideas in manners that can become a complete surprise.
