My roommates and I recently had a conversation about how soy milk is made. Soy milk is, as you might guess, not actually made from any sort of dairy product. It’s not in any way related to cows, even. In fact, it’s illegal in certain countries, mostly in Europe, to call it soy “milk” because it’s not from a cow; legally, the producers of soy milk are required to call it soy “drink” in those countries. Soy milk is actually produced by soaking soybeans that have been dried, and then grinding them through water. What comes out is a product that’s somewhat milky in consistency, hence the commune nomenclature used by manufacturers when they call their product soy “milk”.
