A most thrilling trip was a prolonged visit to the land of Gauguin—Tahiti. While there, I painted as Gauguin did. I met one of his many illegitimate
sons who offered to sign my paintings with his name, assuring me that I would become famous when his English agent came to Papeete to take him to England for a showing of his work—and he would include mine, with his signature. I did not accept the offer, not because his work was nothing like his father's, but because of some misguided integrity I had when I was young and life was full of promise.
