The Shakers were known, among other things, for their inventiveness and their attention to detail. One example is their invention of the flat broom, which cleaned much more efficiently than the common round-bristle broom. Another example was their beautiful wooden oval boxes. The design improved on the wooden "pantry box" design that was used at the time, by adding the distinctive "swallowtail" joint which allowed for the expansion and contraction of the wood at the overlap without splitting. This Fresh Paint drawing shows a rustic and colorful stack of Shaker oval boxes. Enjoy.
