Scotland Update

A few background notes about recent uploads in the Scotland collection. . .

"Wind and Weather" - one of Scotland's many wind farms. In one area we saw publicity suggesting local opposition to a proposed wind farm. People talk about the noise. But we stopped quite nearby, and couldn't hear anything. The rotors are frozen in this image, but they were spinning. Should I Photoshop in some blur? :-)

Dunnet Head Lighthouse . . . John O'Groats has the rep as Scotland's northernmost village, but the point actually furthest north is here, at Dunnet Head, further west on the coast. You approach over a winding 1-lane road through rising moors and arrive at this pleasant lighthouse commanding a high cliff full of sea birds. It was windy and raining, hardly unusual, and that added to the atmosphere. This obviously unnatural treatment of the scene aims to capture the feel of being there.

"Beach" — Dotted here and there along Scotland's northern coast are white sand beaches with water in colors that make you think of the Caribbean. This splendid example faces out across the mouth of Loch Eriboll towards headlands so remote that I can't even find a name for the region on any map.

"Loch Eriboll towards Ben Hope" — The coast road then turns inland along the western shore of Loch Eriboll and into some classic Highland scenery of brown peat moors leading the eye towards the bulk of Ben Hope, the most northerly of Scotland's "Munros" — mountains over 3000 feet.
