Rusty Blue Chevy

Wabi Sabi, the aesthetic of the beauty in the imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. This is a Japanese ideal that has roots in Buddhism. This is the only explanation I can find as to why I find rust and decay so appealing, especially when it's an old truck, tractor or barn. I guess the closest western equivalent would be "rustic" but even that does quite say it. The subject of this sketch, a disused 1954 Chevy truck was found in a small, rural town in northern Utah. The actual truck didn't have so much rust on it but I decided to "enhance" it. The water tank was there but it was silver in color, I just had to rust it up. Much of the background and foreground was invented, what was there wasn't that attractive. This is a mixed media piece. After laying it all out in graphite I went over it with pen adding all the details as I went along. Then I colored the whole thing with watercolor paint. After the watercolor dried I used colored pencil to provide a little more "pop" to certain areas.
