Runaway

My favorite quote happens to come from my one of my two favorite choreographers, Twyla Tharp. She says, "Art is the only way to run away without leaving home". I have found this to be true.
I often find myself dreaming of running away. Not permanently, mind you. But I still imagine myself taking off somewhere. I want to go somewhere pretty, somewhere warm, somewhere else. Right now I don't have the money for travel. And I'm not totally sure how much fun I would have if I went alone. But I sure do have wanderlust.
Until the day that I can travel, I have my art. I can escape into my drawings and my paintings and forget about reality for awhile. When it is cold and snowy outside, I can escape into a beach scene. When I'm feeling dull, I can create a bright painting with many colors to liven things up. Anything that I feel is missing from my life, I can try and create it in my sketchbook or on canvas. It's an amazing feeling.
Lately I have come to appreciate Ms. Tharp's quote very much. I find my art to be a reflection of my feelings and my daydreams. I truly am running away without going anywhere.
