Plenty of Drama in Knee Deep Water

Did you ever think that you need some excitement in your life? Nothing earth shattering or really dangerous, but a little touch of something different. If we spend each and every day doing the same routine, can we really be enjoying the priceless gift that God gave us? Imagine eating plain white rice for every meal. Our lives and our artwork can become like that if we don't take drastic measures to put a certain amount of adventure in both.

In creating the painting "Knee Deep", a sense of action was created by the waves folding in on a rocky coastline. The surfer is framed, frozen in time, coming down a cascading Prussian blue wall of water. The wave action here, is caused by shallow water hitting a reef. This produces an excellent wave, in water only "knee deep". That's where the title for the piece comes from.

This surfer boy is totally amped coming down the face of this spectacular wave. You can see the pleasure and intensity on his face.

Reference for this surfing scene comes from an interesting Japanese woodcut. Don't be afraid to draw on others experience to enhance your own artwork. You may come up with a painting or sculpture that is truly moving and exciting for yourself and your audience.
