Photography cannot be art???

I hate it when people tell me that art photography isn't art. Nothing seems to have changed in all those years. But it seems that only soulless photo programs like for instance photoshop can produce successful crap images with an overload of surrealistic fake effects.
For about thirty years ago a photographer had to get up at 4 in the morning. Heading for the woods with a suitable model, an aggregate and a smoke machine for ground fog. With a shivering body the girl would stand there barely dressed, catching a terrible cold, in artistic interaction with the photographer who was desperately seeking for the right pose for the most perfect shot.
This is Art. Art with a capital "A". And art is hard work. Pushing yourself over the boundaries of your soul. Creating light and shadow in the world of your dreams.
Some more light here. A little less over there. Please hand me that screen to cover up some light. Oh, I almost forgot to put some detail lighting in the corner.
Hours of retouching after the final shot. Revising over and over again. It's not only the visualization of your soul. It's a craft.
Today it's so much easier. Put the whole scene in front of a green screen in the studio and you can fill in the background as you please and afterwords the lazy fun with photoshopping. A ground fog? Push the button. Some extra light over there? Push the button. A yellow, green or purple model? Push the button.
In my eyes the art photographer lost the battle of recognition many years ago by selling his artistic soul to photoshop.
Keep your work pure! Create as much as you can by hand. Crawl over the boundaries of your soul but keep it real and honest craftsmanship.

Hugo, after reading and commenting on your post above pertaining to photography being art, I viewed your site and your work is truly magnificent. Having said that, I appreciate your art and your methods, but I and a lot of other artist do produce digital paintings and art. I do not believe because we learn and use modern technology to produce an artistic image that it is any less art.

Totally agree and well said. Art and photography has always intermingled. The truth is I can paint most scenes in watercolor quicker than I can shoot the photo, do post and tediously work the colors into an artistic image, but I love the results. I still like traditional art and still produce and sell pieces, but it is a digital world and art is no exception. Art photographers and photographic art have been around a very long time. They are indeed visual artist.
