One Thing I Love About Art Or An Exercise in Attitude Adjustment

One thing I love about art is that it challenges me to develop an attitude of gratitude. It's so easy to start taking things for granted and falling into a sense of entitlement. And so instead of waking to rain and thinking of all of the wonderful things about rain, I moan because I just got my hair done and the moisture's going to ruin it, because I could have saved money on a car wash, because it looks so gloomy outside. But to get myself into the right mindset for painting I welcome the soothing patter of rain against my windowsill, am fascinated by the patterns its streaks leave on the glass, marvel at the way some drops fall off the petals of a flower outside my window. It's only when I let go of my expectations that I begin to see what a beautiful world we live in. And so, I'm thankful for:

Waking up another day, "in the land of begin again" (as someone I know used to call it), with the potential to apologize and make amends for something stupid I said of did, to succeed where I failed before, to rework a painting that took a seriously wrong path, to start afresh. I'm feeling an attitude of gratitude already and since I'm now on a roll, I'm also grateful for.

A warm bed to spend the night in, a roof over my head, food to eat.
Clean water to drink and wash with.
Clothes to wear.
A car - and feet - to get me around.
A job to go to.
A reasonably sound mind.
A reasonably healthy body.
A special friend.
Creative talent.
So many other people with creative talent.
The renewal of spring; the approach of summer.
A God Who could dream up a color like Cadmium Red.
A computer to type these thoughts on.
A Facebook page to share them with.
I’m feeling oh so grateful now and ready to get busy, so
Peace out.
