Ocean Photography

Ever since I was young I have always loved the ocean. It has so much beauty and power and no matter how stressed out I may be I can always rely on the ocean to calm me down and make me feel normal again. When I lived in Hawaii a block away from the ocean it was a ritual to wake up and take a dip in the water. Let the waves throw me around a little bit and it was like a morning massage before I started my day. Every day it was a nice refreshing way to wake up. No matter if the waves were flat or if the waves were 20 feet+ there was always beauty to be seen going to the beach. My interest in photography started around middle school. My dad gave me his camera for a photography class I was taking and I was competing in big air and slopestyle for skiing at that time. I would go up to Heavenly ski resort with my ski buddies and we would take turns taking photos of each other doing tricks off of the jumps and rails in the terrain park. Every time I went to develop the photos they would get better and better. It became addicting. Photography was all of a sudden a new almost sport to me. I wanted to progress and learn and get better shots every time I did a photo shoot. When I moved to Hawaii I all of a sudden got this crazy urge to get more into photography and try to make it my career. I bought an underwater housing for my camera and started taking photos of the turtles and dolphins that would come into Waimea Bay, on the North Shore of Oahu. I was looking for side work and wanted to get my scuba diving certification so I searched online and found that one of the dive shops were looking for help. I called them up and asked if they were interested in having a photographer go down with the divers and take photos. They were into it and so I did that for a while and got better and better at holding my breath freediving. By the time I was ready to come back to the mainland to see family I was holding my breath to depths of 80 feet. My other gig out in hawaii was doing surf photography of all the big competitions such as Billabong Pipe Masters. I would do video and stills together on a double mount tripod. I got to meet a bunch of really good athletes and it was a great experience that I will still seek opportunities in. With all the things that you can take photos of in the ocean I then realized that the ocean itself has to be the most beautiful thing. The power of the waves and the beauty of sunsets reflecting off the water were just amazing. Most of all I think that the feeling that you get from seeing the ocean is so powerful and calming that I really wanted to show others things that I saw that made me happy and stoked on life and the world. Thats a little insight into my photography. Hope you enjoy my work.
