Networking

I'm all kinds of new to this but am passionate about learning more. I am a retired Air Force Firefighter. I am not sure how to network. I am not sure what that really means. I am wondering how that really works. If anyone knows what direction I need to travel or needs a traveling buddy lets sit and talk.
