It began with snap shots my wife took of me watching TV with our dog, Muffet, asleep with her head resting on my shoulder. I didn't think of it as a possible painting till I spotted one of photos taken without the flash, in which the TV cast a shadow on the back wall. Now it was more than just a picture of a man and a dog, sweet though that may be. Now it allowed the viewer to infer the presence of the TV through the cast shadow. And that to me was a subject worth painting, especially as I could also show the TV light on the face and front of the seated figure and I could open up the room give the painting depth and even more drama.
I had the image on my computer and the printer ran out of ink when printing it out. I then sketched in some of the detail with red pen. I like this a lot and might someday do a series of these mixed media works of sketches on photographs.
