Mr. Burns lives with my sister, who rescued him
(at the time worked at the ASPCA)
she sent me his background storyÉ
(in her words)-
He was one of 5 chihuahuas owned by a homeless woman in Queens, NY. Although the woman struggled with medical and psychological issues, she loved her dogs very much, and did the best she could to care for them. I would check on her and the dogs, and periodically offered her help. Sometimes she would accept, but usually declined.
One day, she and the dogs disappeared.
A few months later, in December of 2010, a Veterinarian that the woman sometimes visited, phoned me. She stated that the woman was desperately concerned for her dogs, and wanted to put them up for adoption. It must have been very difficult for her to do that- those dogs were all she had. But she knew they were in danger, and loved them enough to give them up. I promised her that they would be safe.
All 5 dogs were brought to the adoptions department, and four were doing wonderfully.
When the medical staff performed a routine dental on the fifth, they accidentally aggravated an already collapsed trachea. The trachea allows the dog to breathe. Now, this dog was basically breathing through a straw . His prognosis was extremely poor, and euthanasia was recommended.
When I found out, I was devastated. I had promised the woman that her babies would be safe. I begged them to reconsider, and offered to adopt the dog. I knew the little dog would need special care and medication for the rest of his life, and I was willing to give him the chance he deserved.
Now, ÒMr. BurnsÓ , named after the character with the scratchy voice in Ó ÒThe SimpsonsÓ, enjoys a warm house, several four legged brothers and sisters, and a pretty snazzy wardrobe. Oh Ð and I got to keep my promise.
