Morning Lilies, from Heart Melody, English Tales Inspired by Tang Poems

Morning Lilies

A distant fragrance of creamy lilies flushes into the hold mingled with dawn mist
I smell koumiss from the prairie, the harmonious wine of this land
In the days we lived in seclusion, you and I, free as butterflies, fluttered around flowers
Like well-playing bees chasing calla lilies that dispensed nectar
The sound of apples falling to the ground comes through a storm surge
Fruits weigh down the branches, calling for a solid harvest
Song birds arrive from all directions after an overwhelming rainfall
Day and night, a need to tell all

Those innocent years flicker like how her tapering fingers combed through my hair
Thumping up and down the hills, she went into the valley braving wind and rain
The music blown from her flute, just like the song birds,
Lingered long through all the years
Sunk in sleep with ceaseless joy

Roosters on shore break a drunken stupor, the spark of dawn appears
The dazzling light sneaking through the cracks in the deck
Time, passing like flowing water, took away my darling,
Gone with the flowers, the butterflies, and the bees,
But not my home where I spent the best years of my life
And the difficult time we helped sustain each other, hand in hand

* The poem is inspired by a Tang poem, 春曉, by Meng Hao Ran (孟浩然)
