Monotype- Trying Some Washes

In order to create a more graduated tone to certain areas of this print I experimented with applying washes of ink. I added water to the water soluble ink and applied it to the whole plate. As you can imagine the watered down ink doesn't want to adhere to the acrylic plate, so I had to let each successive wash dry first. Then, with full strength ink I brushed on the detail over the washes. Because the adhesion of the washes is tenuous at best, I was able to use various tissues, q-tips, toothpicks and rag fragments to remove the highlights and soften the edges. I am generally please with the outcome with the exception of the bleeding that occurred under the edges where I had the plate taped over the base sketch.

The final product is "TEIA 420's", 6" x 8" monotype print on 9" x 12" Stonehenge paper. TEIA or Trefethen-Evergreen Improvement Assoc. is a club on Peaks Island, ME and the 420's are the sailboats that they use in their junior sailing program.
