Monotype- Gambling On An Outcome

I love the feeling of never really being in control that Monotype printmaking provides. In the process of using water soluble ink, painted on an acrylic plate, and transferring the image to damp paper via an etching press you are always gambling on the outcome. At the moment of the reveal, as you lift the blankets after you pull the print there are always the questions you ask yourself; was the ink to dry to be reactivated, was the paper to wet or to dry, will the print hold its edges or will it have bled too much, and what of the painting, enough ink or too little. The nature of this type of printmaking is that you really only ever get one shot if the transfer is complete. The beauty of this gamble though is that you are never a looser. There is always something to like, and most usually what you like is an affect that is unintentional.

This is a scene familiar those who walk by this cottage on Peaks Island, ME on their way to the beach at Hadlocks Cove.
