Moments in Childhood Magic to Share

“Magic to Share” – 30"x40" oil on canvas… the first of four paintings in a series for 2016 titled “Moments in Childhood”. The opportunity to do this first painting came following recent years that have been difficult for me personally, both emotionally and spiritually. It inspired the idea for a series of children’s images that I believe will provide glimpses of times past, thoughts for the present day and possibly even visions for a promising future. That’s my hope anyway! In any case, it’s a fun way to begin a new year.

Childhood – that brief/powerful time in life when we are forged into the people we will become. Every adult carries memories, good and bad, of the “beginnings”. Through first relationships, first experiences, first glimpses of the infinite possibilities, we are fashioned. Every day provides an opportunity to learn and grow. Most of us hold our memories of childhood throughout our lifetime – if we are wise, we hold on more to all that was right and good, because the truth is, although we “grow up”, the child remains. With adulthood, we learn to become responsible and let go of childishness. But if we allow ourselves to remain childlike in our hearts, we can remember each day is still new and the possibilities are still endless. Then, in doing so, each of us will always have “magic to share”.

Alexandra

The fairy princess was thrilled to find the captured pony. She whispered to him as she set him free “Come with me and we will have great adventures…there will much to talk about and magic to share!”

Certainly not every girl dreams of being a princess or having a pony…but who knows? It seems to be a quite popular theme. The old poem says girls are made of “sugar and spice and everything nice” and while that may be true (most of the time!), there is a lot more to little girls than just that. Girls are filled with a great capacity to love and hearts for adventure. Like little boys, they often dream of changing the world and many grow up to do just that. Possibly one reason some do is this: like this little country girl living a humble life, they dream but understand that not everything has to be imagined. While she pretends and hopes for great things ahead, she enjoys a beautiful day with her own pony – and she knows she is already rich.
I have not had the opportunity yet to get to know the real Alexandra, (we were only briefly introduced) and I cannot really speak for what she was thinking on this day shown. I am enjoying getting to know her family though, they are wonderful people from here in rural Pa. So to her and to them, for all that I imagined while creating this painting, my heartfelt thanks!
