A publication may have very specific requirements for the image; portrait cover image, landscape for articles. Greeting cards and calendars often use landscape framing. It is best for photographers to take both variations; landscape and portrait. By taking portrait and landscape, the photographer has a wider range of uses with the two images of the same subject.
