How to Make Natural Stone Necklace

A video to show how the artist made a natural stone or rock necklace: http://youtu.be/h0Cjw7GYtZY . Word content is as follows:

Hello, my name is Maggie, I’m going to show you a very simple way to make a necklace using raw natural materials, lead-free, and metal-free.

I use the stones from local mountain streams, and I don’t use things to polish them to make the stones too smooth and glossy. They stay completely chemical-free. Here is the way to do it:

Clean the stones using a brush in running water at a sink.
To further clean the stones, put them in a bowl with water and a bit of dish soap.
After an hour or so, take them out, and soak them in vegetable oil overnight, to add a glossy effect to the surface.
Take the stones out and dry them with paper towel.

Now let’s start to make a necklace. First, let’s get all the materials ready:
1 stone
natural hemp cord
materials for making fabric beads: a small piece of fabric, felt, thread, needle, double sided tape, measuring tape and scissors
Cut the hemp cord to 22 inches long
Tie a knot to make a loop at one end of the cord

To make a fabric bead on the other end of the cord:
*Cut out a 1x1 inch square of felt
*Apply double sided tape on one side the felt, adhere the end of the hemp cord to the center of the taped felt
*Roll the felt
*Cut out a piece of fabric that’s about 1.5x2 inches big for covering the felt
*Apply the double sided tape on the fabric, fold the fabric to make it thicker, put the rolled felt on fabric, having a threaded needle ready, then roll the fabric into a bead
*Sew around the fabric bead. Now we have the cord ends finished.

Take out the stone, and tie the stone at the center of the cord. It doesn’t need to be a complicated knot, just make sure to tie it in a place where the stone feels balanced and the knot holds the stone securely. In some cases you may want to wrap the cord two or three times around the stone, either for a tighter hold or just for the way it looks. Do what you think looks and works best for your particular stone.

Then we’ll make 2 more fabric beads on either side of the stone, using the same method we used to create the end bead. Place the beads about 1 inch away on either side of the stone.

Here is the necklace. If you have any questions please contact me through my Facebook page.

Have fun making your own necklaces.
