How I Captured Burg Eltz Castle in Munstermaifeld Germany

I drove three hours north to California's Travis Air Force Base military installation, arriving at 0800. The plane to New Jersey's Joint Base Dix-Mcguire was due to depart at 1900, but was delayed by five hours. At midnight, we finally boarded for our five-hour flight to the east coast. We arrived at the New Jersey military base at 0500 and waited for an hour to get baggage and a ride to the on-base lodging.

I finally got to sleep at 0700, only to be disturbed by housekeeping two hours later, and finally had to be out of the room by 1100 to make our 1600 flight to Germany. Arrived back over to the flight terminal at 1400 for our 1600 departure, only to learn the flight was pushed back to 2300 that evening. With no rental car and no where to go, I had to sit around for another seven hours waiting to depart. Our plane to Germany departed on time; I had eight hours of great sleep, and arrived at Ramstein Air Force Base at 0800 the next day.

Got off the plane, picked up my bags, and the hotel was just across the street. Checked in, and had to catch a bus for a two-mile trek to pick up the rental car. The next morning I set off for my destination - Burg Eltz - in Munstermaifeld, Germany.

Early the next morning I departed with a foreign GPS navigator, on streets, highways, and autobahns I had never driven before for a three-hour drive. Picked up a speeding ticket for 5km over from a roadside radar camera, but finally arrived at the castle. Unfortunately, the castle was closed for the winter season.

The flights home were no better - two additional cancellations, lost baggage, and many frustrations but, what I went through to get the shot was worth it all. It was free airfare to and from, so my only out-of-pocket expenses were for the room, rental car, and food -- and of course the $40 speeding ticket which arrived by mail 30 days later.

Would I do it again? In a heartbeat!
