"Historical National Masterpiece 1876" . . . This vintage image represents, in one grand tableau of allegorical designs, the history of the Grand Republic of the United States of America. From an original 19th century (1876) engraving by Professor Luthy. All Rights Reserved © 2014 padre art
In the midst of a Gothic arch of triumph, you see the portrait of the Father of his country, the Immortal Washington. The three graces offer him the tribute due to his merits; allegorical figures representing the fine arts, the sciences, commerce and the industry of the country, surround the portrait, and four angels, the symbols of the four elements hold the frame, and the Cable unites the two continents by electricity.
From the center of the portrait, from the heart of Washington, as from the sun of the planetary system, silvery rays traverse the whole tableau. Beneath the portrait, in five niches interwoven between fine arabesques, you see in small landscapes an allegorical representation of the history of the United States: 1, a wigwam of the Autochthon Indians of New York: 2, the landing of the Pilgrims (1620): 3, A masterly portrait of Columbus: 4, America in its present power and glory (New York 1876): 5 the capitol at Washington.
At the side columns of the arch, surrounding the portrait of Washington, are suspended in round frames, the portraits of the greatest men of the past of the Union, the prominent founders of the nation: Lafeyette, Franklin, Fulton, Henry Clay and others.
At the top of the vault of the arch are three heralds, supported by the escutcheons of the Union and Constitution, proclaim Liberty and Union. Between the columns of the arch and outer framework of the picture are numerous allegoric figures and vignettes, representing Religion and Charity, Justice and Power (Army and Navy) and the two monuments of Washington at Baltimore and Bunker Hill.
The surrounding frame is of Gothic scrollwork, in which the escutcheons of the thirty-eight states of the Union are artfully interwoven, and on which are engraved the most important historical and statistical facts of each respective State.
In the four corners of the picture you see the portraits of the four pillars for the preservation of the Union: Lincoln, Farragut, Seward and Chase. And in the midst of the scrollwork, on the foot of the picture, on an escutcheon the handshaking of the North and South, with the inscription, Union For Ever. The star-spangled banner and the American eagle crown the image.
