GRAYSON PERRY SUCKS

After massive television exposure this past few weeks and the success of his tapestry exhibition in Liverpool and Leeds is it any surprise the Turner Prize winner is sucking in the crowds by the thousands to view his WHO ARE YOU exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London, with its assortment of tapestry, pottery and painting.
This topical yet strangely muted exhibition from the once controversial cross dresser seems in many ways to be more about the audience relationship with the artist then the subjects.
The exhibition focuses on subjects who are in the process of radical change, in Grayson¡¦s words ¡§They are the images of identity, snapshots taken from a narrative of people¡¦s lives¡¨
But this could also be said about the publics perception of subjects that not so long ago would have filled them with dismay, for his new audience are made up middle England, middle class, small c conservatives. OMG we can only marvel at the power of the little box in our living rooms, a Turner prize winner, Grayson has become the darling of the rank and file tweed skirted sensible shoed ladies of the shires. Accident or design GP has returned to his own dyed roots.
But having said that craftsmanship of the work is never in doubt and would have pleased even the old boy himself William Morris (the original champagne socialist) who¡¦s exhibition Anarchy and Beauty is also showing at the gallery.

Stanislav Gassian

On Friday in total contrast to the big hitting exhibitions around the square I head over the river to Waterloo to check out the latest work by Stanislav Gassian at a new exciting space Gabriel Arts. This is a gallery for art lovers who enjoy their art real with a smell of oil paint and linseed oil hanging in the air. This once Buddhist meditation centre has been sympathetically converted into this intimate art space by partners Patrick and Maria.
The last time I hooked up with Stan was back in the summer where he was showing at the Parallax art fair in Kings Road Chelsea, since then he has been busy both here in London and Europe most recently in Rotterdam.2014-11-14 19.00.11
