Framing Large Paintings the Cheap Way

July 21st, 2008 - 03:17 PM

I paint large (30"x40") paintings on canvas (non-gallery wrapped). I recently got my work accepted at a nice gallery (The Fat Cat, Ltd. -- http://thefatcatltd.com) and I need to quickly frame the works they're going to display.

Framing at this size is definitely not cheap, so I've been using a trick I learned from a friend of mine, Jack Stone (http://www.brushfirestudios.org/index.html). Using just strips of wood from Lowe's and spray paint, if you measure carefully, you can make a nice frame. Measuring and cutting carefully is the trick. I just had to make another trip to Lowe's because I didn't measure (or cut) as carefully as I would have liked the first time. Fortunately, I'll be able to re-use the wood from my first attempt.

Does anyone else out there do this?

I switched to box canvas for exactly this reason..... frames are so expensive and I'm no good at woodwork lol

My dad's into carpentry so I get this sort of stuff free! Custom made frames and even stretchers; the lot! Check out my 'Storm Over Magic Bay' and 'Chocolate Orgasm' - both of which are over a metre wide, and were put together by my wonderful daddy :-)
