I remember being inspired by Bob Ross as a child. I sat with my mom every Saturday with paper and pencil while watching what seemed like thirty minutes of pure magic. I didn't have oil paint and water color wasn't the same so I would try to make my drawings look like his paintings which never really worked out. Somehow a freshly sharpened yellow number two pencil moving across the terrain of blue lined notebook paper laid out horizontally with the little holes on the bottom just didn't quite add up to the magic I saw on the television. Trying to use watercolor was even worse. Those long plastic trays with the just add water ovals of dried color cakes would not sing the way his oils did. And I could try to beat the devil out of my tiny little toothpick brush but it would probably just snap in two. My masterpiece usually ended us as a curled up muddy mess in the end. Something Jackson Pollock might drool over but who the crap was he? Bob always ended the program with a happy little gigantic tree that lived right smack dab in the middle of the painting. My mom hated that tree but that was my favorite part. He could have covered up the sentimental postcard painting in the background with a whole forest of tree's for all I cared. I just wanted to watch the magic unfold. Fast forward to today and here I sit making the tree the focal point. To me the tree is not just a subject for artwork but a symbol for something that has guided me throughout my life. Inspiration.
