When the Art Institute's Allison Langley, associate conservator of paintings, and Stephanie D'Alessandro, Gary C. and Frances Comer Curator of Modern Art, took Magritte's painting "Time Transfixed" into the lab in preparation for the exhibition "Magritte: The Mystery of the Ordinary, 1926–1938," they found a surprise beneath the surface.
