Pop art - the direction in the fine arts arisen in the middle of the 50th years. The term “pop art” appeared in 1956, it meant – popular art. Such name was given to the new direction of a modernism by the art critic Lawrence Elouey. This direction is considered a product of mass culture, this art of crowd and is cogitable simple people, but it doesn’t belong to folk art. The main distinctive feature of pop art, that the artist creates a certain message by means of usual subjects, photos, pages of popular comics is. These subjects are taken out of the habitual context and are located in artificial reality, thereby lose habitual qualities and get the new. The pop art takes sources in dadaism.

The “Parallel of Life and Art” exhibition which took place in London in 1953 was of great importance for rapid development of the new movement. On it the works created on the basis of photographic sources – frames of movies, x-ray pictures, etc. were exhibited. Thanks to this exhibition the pop art was recognized and before it known art galleries opened the doors.

In Europe and the USA the pop art developed a little variously.

The pop art passed three phases of development in England:

First phase: emergence of the new movement, covers the period from 1953 to 1957. The first who used photos in the works, there was Francis Bacon. The number of adherents of this direction quickly increased. During this period development of pop art was connected with technological subjects.
Second phase: it is the period from 1958 to 1961. Here Richard Smith is allocated. The pop art everything goes to abstraction more deeply.
The third phase of pop art began in 1961. For it the urbanistic subject which revealed artists through the image of technical subjects and elements of means of mass communications is characteristic.

If in England the aspiration to abstraction is observed, in America, the pop art is opposed to an abstract expressionism. There the idea is popular that to the new current opens the extraordinary expressiveness of casual subjects which isn’t seen in everyday life. In the USA pass numerous exhibitions with participation of artists of pop art in the first half of the 60th years of the XX century: Warhol, Liechtenstein, Oldenburg, Wesselman, etc. The strong list towards advertizing and commerce therefore often their works were perceived as originally issued show-windows became a distinctive feature of the American pop art.

The pop art didn’t lose the relevance and now, it continues to have impact on modern culture. He creates a peculiar art world – real, abstract and surrealistic at the same time that finds application in advertizing, monumental and easel works.
