Contemporary abstractions

The purpose for this blog is to examine the point of view within contemporary abstract art. To start, I believe the abstract artist creates as a result of an impenetrable need to document his or her inner existence. It seems clear to me that the complexity manifest in the art of the abstract artist (no matter the approach) stems from an unconscious need to express or document unfiltered feelings, thoughts, etc. This expression is an accrual from life experiences good, bad, or indifferent, and does not necessarily involve another human being. It has everything to do with the interpretation of the artist's past, present, and possible future as a living being. Because the artist has committed to documenting a subject that is more or less an approximation of the unconscious at its apex and at its medium an embodiment of the subconscious, the abstract artist explores the human psyche in a way that was not available prior to the modern era and perhaps not explored in absolute depth prior to the abstract expressionists and the New York School.

The renowned art coach Paul Klein believes that a successful career in visual art requires the artist to A) Have his or her own style; B) Create 'good' art; C) Get involved with the art community. Here is a short video where he talks about this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bD156A5Hrk

To succeed in the contemporary art world, connect with others. This is especially true for emerging artists. Consult with artists who have been where you want to go. Seek out artists who are where you are, dealers, collectors, patrons, etc, Be honest about your art and your goals. But most of all create good art; art that surpasses -- Do you agree?

Abstract expressionist inspired sculpture is as much a part of the contemporary art scene as any painting, sketch, or digital innovation. Here are a few links that expand on this premise: https://www.moma.org/learn/moma_learning/themes/abstract-expressionism/abstract-expressionist-sculpture https://www.saatchiart.com/sculpture/abstract-expressionism

It is compelling to note that both Picasso and Warhol (arguably the two most important artists of the 20th century) shifted away from somewhat classical approaches to their art to more abstract variations as each matured. In Warhol's case the imperfections incorporated into his silk screen paintings resulted in abstractions. For Picasso, a similar case can be made regarding his creations including Cubism and especially his work after 1940. Do you agree?

On Thanksgiving, I am thankful that I am able to be an artist and to participate in the community of artists, especially those who practice the art of the abstract. And now to the business at hand. I have enclosed a link to the ARTDEX. I have found this art service vehicle quite helpful on a number of levels: https://www.artdex.com/

Has it been fifteen days? I ran into a little problem that disabled my access to the Internet for a while. But now I am back. Today I want to bring attention to a 30 year old German abstract artist Peppi Bottrop. I discover some of his work on Instagram and enjoyed the straight forwardness of his style and subject. Here are two links you may use to explore more in depth: http://www.artuner.com/insight/spotlight-peppi-bottrop/ http://www.artuner.com/insight/interview-artist-peppi-bottrop/

Earlier I found a website for the PearlLam Galleries. I began an investigation of the artists listed there and later decided to make this post as an acknowledgement to the deeply rewarding experience Asian artists have given to the full scope of the abstract in contemporary and modern art. I have included the galleries website, a youtube video, and one more site: http://www.pearllam.com/artists/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gs32SzBz_aM http://www.widewalls.ch/10-asian-artists/

Earlier today I landed on the homepage for the Museo de Arte Abstracto Espanol Cuerca Fundacion Juan March. I was reminded of the enormous contributions to abstract expression in painting and sculpture by such Hispanic artists as Esteban Vicente, Alfred Jensen, Jose Guerrero, Roberto Matta, Antoni Tapies, and others. I have included the link to the museum: http://www.march.es/arte/cuenca/coleccion/abstracto/?l=2 If nothing else please take the virtual tour.

Michael Scott is another visual artist based in New York city. He works within the realm of "conceptual abstraction" -- I find his paintings to be attractive in an objectively post-minimalist sort of way. I have not made a post in a few weeks. I apologize. I have been in transition. I am moving to South Carolina. In the interim: Let us consider the Dresden born German visual artist Gerhard Richter. It's said that he may be the world's foremost living abstract artist. Is this consideration a product of his system of painting, his output, style(s), his longevity, ingenuity, the relative scope within his journey as an artist? All of the above? What say you?

It is typical for private collectors, art galleries, and museums to insure their investments against lost or damage, but in today's market conscious fine art arena should the independent artist consider purchasing specialized fine art insurance on specific works or for his or her entire output?

Increasingly, contemporary artists view the opportunities to exhibit and sell art online as a pathway for cultivating collectors directly. Using venues previously reserved for dealers and gallery owners, artists with their own studios are now developing marketing practices that are far more business oriented than before. Taking queues from Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, and Keith Haring these artists understand that marketing art independently has the potential for a more satisfying experience...

Is Cy Twombly the true inheritor of what de Kooning, Kline, Motherwell, and others brought to American art in the 1940s? His drips, drags, scribbles, patterns, his fragile and directed lines are all uniquely his. Today, within the realm of Abstract Expression, his influence is clear and present. Choosing to live outside the US from 1957 on, his life provides an interesting avenue from which to study. His decisions on what to paint and why (for me) inspires -- Is he the American Miro?

Is art (especially contemporary art) as it evolves, a product of determinism in any of its characterizations, or is it more physiological or a non-deterministic behavior? On the other hand, could art as we are experiencing it, represent a type of development or creation, a non-sequitur if you will, of some kind of split of the two?

With painters growing more comfortable with acrylics and the science now dispelling the varied myths associated with the acrylics vs. oils debate, it becomes apparent that acrylics can and in some cases perhaps should take a place in the tool-kit for the contemporary painter.

"All great contemporary artists, schooled or not, are essentially self-taught and are de-skilling like crazy. I don't look for skill in art...Skill has nothing to do with technical proficiency...I am interested in people who rethink skill, who redefine or reimagine it: an engineer, say, who builds rockets from rocks." taken from an Artnet magazine article quoting Jerry Saltz, senior art critic and columnist for the New York magazine.

There are a number of interpretations governing the significance of "authenticity" as it relates to the aesthetic value of a work of art. Hence, creative movements, periods, or individual performances earn historical priority. When art is initially documented as original and sustained moving forward as original as say the influence of Kandinsky's "abstraction" on painting, we can begin to understand how the "newness" in the creation of a work of art has a role in its aesthetic responsibility.

Abstract expressionist painting in the early 21st century has succeeded taking the next step within a practice firmly established after 1946. Artists such as: Zitko, Goldberg, McClelland, Mehretu, Oehlen, Ostrowski, Fedida, Moran, Ramone, and others appear to have created work that is independent of what is on the outside of the mind, while (in a clear way) distinguishing the practice from what the conceptual artists, post-surrealists, neo-expressionists, and neo-dadaists are all doing...

How do you prepare for a career in abstract painting? Many artists start with some form of professional mentoring. Through education, it is possible to augment your art teaching or perhaps as an art critic. But the creating of the art itself? How important is it to develop a way of thinking about the world and your place in it? How important is it to understand drawing, or painting -- how to create art? How important is it to become a part of a community of artists?

The poet William Blake is credited with the following observation: "Invention depends altogether upon execution or organization..." In the case for making abstract art (or perhaps any good art) this seems to be more true than not.

In 2016 the return to figuration, mixed-media and sculpture, the fracturing of figuration, and the advent of software ideas, have all created (in large) a shifting within the realm of 'what to paint' or 'how to paint it? Abstract art reflects the relationships that have characterized American art from the late 1950's into today, and is currently a clear mixture of influences. The questions of what to paint or how to paint it are now defined by the freedom to create?

Has the divide between color field and action painting been erased as a result of the acceptance of expressionist approaches to making non-representational abstract painting?

Robert Motherwell once stated that the Abstract Expressionist movement was "the most hated" development in art. Perhaps. It was one of the most jarring. Today, it is one of many controversial art movements. Has the influence of the abstract expressionist movement lost its power over the more figurative inventions associated with the abstract approach? And, if this is so, can it be said that de Kooning's vision emerged as the more relevant from the 1946 to 1962 American art period?
