Collecting Art

The urge to collect inherent from childhood. Remember collecting seashells at the beach or perhaps coins, dolls or trains? As adults we still have the same urge but focus on things more relevant to our current lives. The sense of beauty is also inherent. Combining collecting and aesthetics is the first step to becoming an art collector. It does not take a lot of money. It does not take sophisticated knowledge. It s however fun.

Start with contemporary art, art being made today. Most contemporary art is new art being sold for the first time. This is called the primary market. The secondary market is where existing art is resold. Emerging art designates art created by artists early in their carriers. It is sold a lower price point until the artist becomes established. The hardest part of becoming an art collector is buying your first piece of art. As one collects their tastes become more refined and focused. Art collecting is an emotional experience. It reflects your personality. It tells others who you are. It will become a passion.

Art can be an investment but it should be done for fun and the experience itself. You don't need a degree.. Your particular interests will guide you to books, lectures and museums. Your passion will grow stronger as you collect and learn. It is a social activity.
