Creativity. It's what makes us human. It's essential and fundamental. Why then is it what we so frequently allow it to be removed from our lives?
We live in our boxed-up lives. Houses, cubicles, classrooms, even schedules conform us. That is why being creative is so vital and should be encouraged.
Upon completion of a mixed media piece two of my daughters were inspecting the finished work. Turning the paper every which way, they were discussing the colors and shapes, guessing what it could be. And these weren't out of the blue guesses. They were thoughtful as they each explained why and how they saw tears, an hour glass, and a cat. It provoked a conversation that required critical thinking and creativity and gave me the opportunity to explain why abstract art is so fascinating (because everyone can see something different). This one piece of paper improved our little boxed up world for a few moments and let our minds wander as well as inspiring my daughters to run off and create their own work (in my sketchbook, of course).
I'm still looking for the cat !?!
