Bonsai is a Japanese art form using miniature trees grown in containers. The Japanese word "bonsai" means "plantings in tray". The art form exists in other cultures, including that of China and Vietnam. The Chinese art form is called penjing. And it was the Chinese culture that spread the art to Japan over a thousand years ago.
I love bonsai. But I am not very good at it. My attempts all start well. But then I either lose interest or get distracted by other things. The art of training and grooming miniature trees requires a lot of dedication and discipline. Isn't that interesting? The administration of discipline in itself requires discipline on the part of the one who disciplines. And the disciple (the tree) cannot benefit without many long hours on he part of the one who disciples (the gardener). But when done right, the results are more than worth the effort.
"No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it."
-- Hebrews 12:11 NIV
