Becoming an Artist

I am someone who never practiced nor applied myself to learning how to be creative. I limited myself to the knowledge that I could write prose and I could write poetry. I felt I was not the creative artist that I wished I was. For example, in spite of the fact that I love music (all kinds) and that I have a pretty good "beat" for music (used to play piano) and that, with my attempt with poetry, I could probably write song lyrics if I really applied myself; I know I cannot sing well. No way, no how. Maybe, with practice and voice lessons, I could manage mediocre. Still, not going to be a dream come true.

So, when introduced to a form of art I could actually do, I became a person on a mission. Maybe this could be something I could learn and become good at. I learned the basics. I practiced my own designs. I started using color. I experimented with the idea of learning to paint with watercolors or acrylics but found I was most comfortable using pencil and sharpie inks. I started looking at pictures and images online and took them as inspirations for my own drawings. I practiced every day. And I started noticing something. I actually LIKED some of my work. Looking back at the beginning to where I am now, I have really improved. Drawing has become a daily routine, like a good habit.

I dabbled in other arts and crafts and tried creating many things that I eventually stopped making. It is now all about the art. And not just any art, but art I can envision on greeting cards. Something to brighten someone's day or mourn a loss or inspire or congratulate, etc.

So, I continue to practice every day, creating new lines and colors to mix into something that will hopefully touch someone in some way. I continue to think of new designs, new or different ways to create an image that countless others may have also made. The competition is fierce and the talent in this world is amazing. But, in spite of the overwhelming amount of beautiful paintings, photography, sculptures and other art, there will always be room for more.
