Artists Residencies

I was fortunate enough to be accepted into my first Artist Residency program at Centrum, Fort Worden, in beautiful Port Townsend, Washington.

Why did I choose January?
A: nothing is more inspiring to open a new year than a week to concentrate on my own gifts and goals for the year ahead. Rain? Cold? Fog? Sun? Oh yes, we had it all. But isn't that the perfect time to be in your studio to get things done? It was for me.

What did you work on?
A: my focus was the 2013 series I started but wasn't able to complete. To explore anything that struck my fancy. To have as much time to just "paint" without interruption as possible. To that end I enjoyed 7 days in the studio and produced enough work for both studies and completed pieces.

Did you go alone?
A: a fellow artist who is also serious about her commitment to art traveled with me. We found that sharing a cabin but separate work spaces allowed us time to connect in conversation and meals easily and yet return to our creative areas as needed.

Was a studio included?
A: I paid a slight fee for the use of the studio all week. This offered windows (something my city studio doesn't), and a view across the campus to let my mind wander.

What did you do when you weren't painting?
A: Walking the beaches and bluffs, photography, cooking and eating, going to town - a mile+ walk away, visiting with fellow artists and just taking the time to reflect. Did I mention I was "unplugged" most of the time.

Would you do this again or recommend it to others?
A: Absolutely! If you are serious about your art and need that time away from your daily routine and commitments, this is imperative. This will become an annual practice for me.

Unlike some art residencies, this was a quiet month of the year. If you are willing to be alone you can't go wrong!

All the best!
