Art In Public Schools

Art has really changed over the years in school. Back in the day when I was coming up in school, we had actual art class. This means at a certain part of the day the homeroom teacher gathered us students up and put us in a single filed line. We would become very excited at this point. We were excited because we knew it was that special time of t he day. With this in mind, we students gladly got up and followed our homeroom teacher out of the classroom.

The teacher would take us to another classroom down the hall. With one step into the art room, we students could tell we weren't in homeroom class any more. The art classroom was usually filled with art projects and pictures from students through out the school. All of us antsy little children couldn't wait to sit at a table and commence to doing art. We knew that in art class we would be able to create crazy and creative great things . Art class wasn't just for drawing in those days. We also made paper machete mask and made little clay objects. Those were the days.

However, now a days, students are lucky to get any type of art exposure at school. It all starts with school budget cuts. The first thing to go when a budge has to be shrunk is the art and music classes. Art instruction then becomes the responsibility of the homeroom teacher. Homeroom teachers do what they can for art time in class. However, it is nothing like the art class teacher who is formally trained to teach students the different aspects of art.

The subject of art has almost disappeared in most classroom settings across America. When more focus is needed on test or other subjects, art tends to fall by the wayside. We have to bring art back to the schools. Our children are becoming less and less creative. This is evident in our society. Young people today would rather copy or borrow from someone else rather then come up with their own creative ideas and innovations. We can not properly shape our future if we don't have the dreamers and creators to help us mold our society. Lets petition to have art put back in the schools, so that we can get our youth creating again.
