The Journey

I had some extra acrylic paints on my palette after completing a painting and thought.......let me just throw these paints onto an empty canvas. As I dipped into the blues, greens, yellow and white paints, I imagined a sea and a misty morning sky. Separating the horizon from the sky was not intentional. The idea just starting coming out of the paints and how they were being applied to the canvas. Without much thought, I continued this process and set the canvas aside. The canvas sat this way for several weeks, and each time I entered my art room I would look at the unfinished product and say to myself----I see a dolphin in this picture. I also like the way the colors were applied---the horizon was misty and the waters were murky. I kind of liked that effect. Normally, I am very defined and "unimpressionistic." This "extra paint on the canvas" was coming alive to me with ideas that were perpetuated merely by putting down extra paint onto a canvas! When I picked the canvas back up to paint, I'll have to admit---there was some anxiety in "messing up" the affect the painting had taken on in my mind. I knew I wanted to add the dolphin.......so that came first......then..........the painting process of adding layers of color---trying to keep the original effect of an undefined horizon. As the painting emerged, I connected with the journey of the dolphin. Can you imagine never reaching a destination? Can you imagine just going through life one day at a time with thoughts based on "am I happy with the course I am taking?" Wow....to never achieve a destination and still be happy with the process and the progress you are making? The dolphin emerged as a very happy creature of the sea--leaping towards its destiny--and fulfilling each day with the purpose of just enjoying the journey through life.
