Perfect Balance

Introduction from Storm King Art Center FB page:
"¡®Broken Obelisk¡¯ (1963/1967, exhibition copy 2005) by Barnett Newman is one of three new sculpture on view at Storm King this season.

Barnett Newman created only six sculptures during his career, and of them, ¡®Broken Obelisk¡¯ is the largest and most significant. He conceived of the idea for this work in 1963, and the first two exemplars of it were produced in 1967. Despite the sculpture¡¯s massive height and weight, the connection between its two monolithic shapes seems delicate, at just more than two inches wide. It reaches simultaneously upwards and downwards, in precarious balance.
