The Time Machine
The inspiration for this piece came from watching a programme about stately homes. Apparently, in days gone by, VIP’s would use the spire-clad roof tops to discuss matters of state out of earshot of the servants below.
I liked the idea of a parallel world, somewhere you could escape to and get a different perspective on things. The inclusion of music, reflections and the starry sky amplify the idea.
I’ve always enjoyed the power of a piano’s silhouette, but I also wanted to emphasise the intensity of relationship between the sheet music, the candle flame and the pianist.
For me, the greatest satisfaction in the painting came from trying to get a sense of detail in the pianist’s face using a fairly daring economy of brush strokes.
People seem quite impacted by this image, my main hope is that it’s achieved a depth of mood.
