Starving Artist?

They archetype of the starving artist is alive and well in many peoples minds. I have talented friends in the arts who are switching to the difficult yet more stable degree of engineering. I have friends parents look down at my chosen profession as reckless or a phase. Who am I to succeed at following every little kids dream? Why should it be “easy” for me to make money? Art isn’t stable. Art is a risk.

I’ve tried/am trying hard to get rid of that unhelpful belief. Art is valuable. It is adding to culture. Me painting a picture of a ballerina is improving the world and I deserve to be compensated for it. We are lucky to now live in the world where people like The Abundant Artist and Andrea Scher exist. There are examples of successful artists everywhere. In every medium, style, gender, and place.

What do I do when I start to fall into the place of “I”m not good enough for this” and ” How could I ever make enough money to survive with just my art!” or the ever wonderful ” My art is shit.” ?

I do something cool…I work on my marketing. This time I’ve FINALLY created an Etsy Shop! I plan on keeping it updated with pottery, and dynamic pieces that Fine Art America just can’t sell. Check it out here

Etsy is great because the user has so much control, and there is an active community already there to welcome you. I’m looking forward to using Etsy and kicking the starving artist archetype in the butt.
