The key to shooting great lightning shots is to use a remote. Right after the lightning strikes click the remote, and view your photo if you would like, but do it quick, so you can do another time exposure. Lighting is very fun to photograph just be careful, and be cautious. Anyone can do this with the right gear, and patience. Make sure you use a low ISO to prevent a lot of noise from entering your image. I tend to like ISO 100. You don't have to worry about shutter speed, I would be more concerned about your F stop depending on the lens and how dark it is. You might have to open your lens up a little but try to stick around your sharpest point on your lens, you don't really want soft lighting.
