Vision

Today, I have been thinking a lot about vision and I was reminded of a poem/painting combination from during my earlier stages of work titled, Oedipus Speaks to Me. For many reasons this particular piece has deep meaning. The poem which was written nearly 13 years ago had significant meaning as I was recovering from a divorce. Ten years later, I would struggle to define on canvas what it is that I wished to represent this painting. I had a "vision" of what I wanted, but the inks kept telling me a different story. The end result....let go, listen to the universe and create what the universe wants for you. This was in complete contradiction to the original poem and yet because of the changes that had occurred in my life for the better, it was a perfect match. I hope you enjoy both the poem and the painting and the reflections of who I was and who I am today.

Oedipus Speaks to Me.

Remove the fate of blindness to one's past;
You are not an actor upon life's stage
wherein Apollo puppets you, less string;
Messengers do not tell tales of prophecy
that cannot be averted.

Though oracles deceive as wolves in wool,
behold! Plagues cast by thine own bias dreams
are withdrawn as light reveals hidden realms.

In redeeming oneself, blindness once cast
on your seeing eyes, is healed;
not by heaven's golden broach, but through
inner jewels polished in coal.

Gaze toward one's end, seeking not to find light after darkness,
but find enlightenment prior to one's end through vision.
